Hooray for Dahlias and we have updated this post with the latest flowers to bloom!
I have scoured the earth for the very best Dahlias for cutting. Months of research then tracking down the tubers, which is much harder then you think!!
Not all Dahlia’s make a good cut flower and not all shades suitable for use as a Wedding Flowers.
You need to consider:
Form (the flower shape);
How productive (if you are going to give it room in your garden then it must sing for it’s supper!
So here at Swan Cottage Flowers, we have decided to have a trial!
The ground here in Stoke Hammond, Buckinghamshire is very very free draining, perfect to growing Dahlia’s!
But not perfect for holding onto water or nutrients and the Summer of 2017 has decided to be a record breaking heatwave of a year!
So we are making sure we feed and water these Dahlia’s well in order to get some great blooms for our DIY Wedding Flower Brides and our Floral Designers and Florists who are counting on us and our Seasonal Flowers! No pressure then!!
We have colour coded the planting into 18 different shade beds, from pure White, Cream and Apricot. With Dahlia’s of all shapes, Ball, Pompom Dahlias, Dinner Plate, Cactus and Decorative
Pinks from pale ballet pink right through to striking magenta!
So here it is!

Outstandingly Beautiful but the most likely to show weather damage due to their open structure. Rain damage is brown so apricot tones hide this better then white or pink tones.
The Favourite of Common Farm Flowers, Green and Gorgeous Flowers and Plant Passion, so it was an absolute must! Its been a favourite with everyone that has seen our Photographs or visited Swan Cottage! Its going to make the Top 10!
These Dahlia’s are very easy to grow, vigorous and due to their shape less susceptible to damage by the weather
Dahlia ‘Henriette’ is from Sarah Raven, here is what she says: Henriette is a queen of the new and fashionable paler palette – in a pale apricot deepening at the centre and the best, spiky, elegant flowers. It also has a good vase life.
Anemone Flowered Dahlias
Two Top Favourites, this week anyway!!
Small Buttonhole Dahlia’s
Floret Flower reported this one as a must! So we must!!
And for something more funky!
The Karma series
These are specifically breed as cut flowers however although they are wonderful there are better varieties…….which is why we are doing the trial – put them side by side and objectively compare.
Plenty more Karma’s to come, I’m just waiting for them to flower and get a great shot!
A bit of a different shape here
Dinner Plate Dahlia’s
After you have spent all this time making your perfect Dahlia wishlist and placed your order…….you don’t always get what you ordered. Dahlia’s are sold when they are asleep and impossible to tell apart so it’s inevitable that you will get a surprise at some point, these are a couple of ours that I will endeavor to put a name to …….
I quite like this lilac one, it will look outstanding with Dahlia Thomas Edison
These are all first out of the blocks so a good choice if you are growing your own Wedding Flowers for and early July Wedding.
