Carnation ‘La France’
Reviving this beautiful old fashioned flower, Carnation Carnation ‘La France’ comes in softest baby and shell pink shades and is the most fragrant of all the carnations in our 2019 trials.
Unlike garden ‘pinks’ these stems are tall and brilliant for floristry. They add fragrance to arrangements after the Roses and Sweetpeas have finished.
Carnation Carnation ‘La France’ is actually a perennial, but I find it is much better grown as an annual, from an early Spring sowing.
How to grow:
Easy to grow, start seeds in early in Spring and plant out after the risk of frost has passed. Flowers can be top heavy so provide support for nice straight stems. For more detailed growing instructions join our ‘Grow Along’ on Instagram
Variety: Dianthus caryophyllus
Type: Hardy Perennial grown as an Annual
Position: Full sun
Germination: Up to 30 days
Harvest: June onwards (90 days to maturity)
Seeds per packet:100 (Approx. counted by weight)
Cutting /Vase Life:
Excellent vase life of 10-14 days if picked as soon as the flowers start to open, straight into ready buckets of water. We rest our stems for a few hours in water, this is called conditioning.
