Dianthus barbatus ‘Auricula Eyed Mix’

Dianthus barbatus

Commonly known as Sweet William, Dianthus barbatus is fabulous for filling your garden with long lasting, fragrant early summer blooms and for a splash of colour you can’t beat this ‘Auricula Eyed Mix’.

Sown in early Autumn for blooms the following Spring. I find in my garden it comes back for another year, all the while providing huge rosettes of evergreen foliage.

Sweet William or Dianthus barbatus ‘Auricula Eyed Mix’ flowers for me from late May and I’m still picking stems as late as early August.

Beautifully scented Dianthus barbatus ‘Auricula Eyed Mix’ has long strong stems and a vase life of more than a week and in the garden, I find it follows on beautifully from Hesperis matronalis (Sweet Rocket) another biennial that blooms even earlier!

How to grow:
Because plants need to be exposed to cool winter conditions (like Tulips) to initiate flowering I Autumn sow Sweet William  in either an unheated greenhouse or cold frame, but they will be just as happy in a sheltered spot outside.  For more detailed growing instructions join our ‘Grow Along’ on Instagram
