Larkspur ‘Smokey Eyes’
I’m always on the hunt for flowers that are ‘just that bit more sophisticated’ and this year I discovered Larkspur ‘Smokey Eyes’!
Palest grey, with flashes of lavender and green, Larkspur ‘Smokey Eyes’ has an excellent vase life, arrange alone or try blending with Larkspur ‘Misty Lavender’ for a truly unique display!
Larkspur makes a real statement in the garden, sow in the Autumn for extra large plants!
I tend to store my seed in the refrigerator or freezer prior to sowing to speed up germination.
Note: All parts of this plant are poisonous, including the seeds. Exercise caution around children and pets.
How to Grow:
Sow seed direct or into modules from Autumn till early Spring. Seeds need cold to break dormancy, the temperature fluctuations of a winter greenhouse create ideal conditions. Dislikes root disturbance. For more detailed growing instructions join our ‘Grow Along’ on Instagram
Variety: Delphinium Consolida
Type: Hardy Annual
Position: Full sun in free draining soil.
Sow: Spring or Autumn
Germination: Up to 30 days
Pinching: Not required
Height: 90-120 cm
Harvest: May/June – July
Seeds per packet: 150 (approx. counted by weight)
Cutting /Vase Life:
For the longest vase life cut when a third of the blooms are open. Delphinium ajacis can also be dried or used to make confetti…
To dry, let all but the top three to four flowers open, then pick and hang upside down in a warm, dry place out of bright light for 2-3 weeks.
Place flowers straight into ready buckets of water. We rest our stems for a few hours in water, this is called conditioning.
