Salad Mix ‘Winter’
Rocket (salad), Pak Choi (White Stem), Mizuna, Mustard (Giant Red)
Available for the first time as a ‘mix’ so you only need to buy ‘one’ packet of seeds to achieve colourful and delicious platefuls this Spring.
Grown as baby salad leaves this spicy mix is my personal ‘all-time favourite’ blend of punchy flavours! Just add olive oil!
Home grown salad is so much more ‘tasty’ when grown yourself and picked ‘fresh’ as you need it! It’s also relatively expensive and good salad bags are difficult to buy in the cooler months so well worth a grow!
The plants will make handsome patio containers and as the seeds emerge you can easily distinguish between the varieties choosing to grow them on separately or together! Your choice!
How to grow:
I start sowing as soon as the light returns in mid February until early Summer before switching to my ‘Summer’ Salad mix. Once the weather starts to cool at the end of August we switch back to this ‘Winter’ Salad Mix.
Sow thinly every 4 weeks direct into Patio Pots (or cells if you prefer) in a well ventilated spot.
Harvesting the young leaves when you need them prevents plants from maturing and ensures harvests of small, tender, flavoured leaves over a long period of time. For more detailed growing instructions join our ‘Grow Along’ on Instagram
Variety: Rocket (salad), Pak Choi (White Stem), Mizuna, Mustard (Giant Red)
Type: Hardy Annual
Position: Full sun / Part Shade
Sow: Spring – Summer
Pinching: Not required
Germination: Up to 30 days
Height: 15-20 cm
Seeds per packet: 500
Harvest: 4-6 weeks from sowing – each patio pot should produce leaves for 2 -3 months. I permanently have at least one pot for ‘eating’ one ‘growing’ and ‘one just sown’.
Move plants to part shade during hot spells to prevent bolting. Protect against aphids and flea beetle. I drop picked leaves into a bowl of deep water for 20 minutes, any bugs will safely float away.
